Zebra mussels probably entered the Great Lakes in the mid- to late 70s, when ships arriving from Europe discharged ballast water containing a variety of aquatic organisms, including zebra mussel larvae. The species rapid dispersal throughout the Great Lakes and major river systems was due to its ability to attach to boats navigating these waters, dispersing fertilized larvae as the ships moved about the lakes.

Zebra mussels can grow to a maximum length of about 50 millimeters (1.9 inches) and live 4.5 years. Their common name was inspired by their dark, zebra-like rays. Females generally reproduce in their second year (spawning April-June, and again in August). More than 40,000 eggs can be laid in a reproductive cycle and up to 1 million in a spawning season (for each female...). Each zebra filters about 1.5 ltrs (2.5 pints) of lake water a day, extracting algae as a food and expelling clear, clean water. The Lakes seem to be a perfect host environment.

That's why the Great Lakes are now clear; and why we have no commercial fishing. This is an 18" x 24" section of the bottom of a Montrose Harbor dock support float recently overturned in a spring storm. But marine biologists and divers say that this is what most of the entire lake bottom now looks like.

Pompey's Pillar

Pompey's Pillar

One thing I love about using filters instead of HDR is being able to love on an image right in the camera, and then only working on it for 5 minutes on the computer(never enough contrast right? and sensor dust mania!)
I will come out here again sometime soon to try some more compositions. We didn't have a whole lot of time for finding spots.

If you have never been to Pompey's Pillar, it's a pretty cool place. If you go during the day, there is a visitor center with lots of cool stuff and knowledgeable people, if you go in the evening, you get to see the sunset on the river basin stretching for miles and miles... and LOTS of stars as you are outside of town a little ways. I would show up with at least a little bit of light out, so you can see where Lewis and Clark(or one of the two guys) carved his name into Pompey's Pillar during their amazing voyage into the unknown...

Experiment showing dirt/dust

Experiment showing dirt/dust

Whilst doing some experimenting with my 70-200 F4 L lens, I noticed that 2 obvious spots were on the shots when I uploaded them to my computer.
I suspect it is dust on the front lens or filter rather than the sensor, as I can't see them on any other shots apart from this series of experiments. The lens in question has internal focusing and zoom so the filter doesn't budge.

iron filter - Vortech tank

Vortech tank iron filter system fleck 7000 high flow 1 cu. ft. whole house system

Iron is commonly seen as red staining on fixtures and may also turn clothes a reddish orange color. Iron bacteria thrives on iron, and is sometimes found in water supplies that contain iron. It can form a build up of gelantinous slime when left undisturbed, and water containing iron bacteria may smell or taste musty. Hydrogen Sulfide contaminates water supplies producing a "rotten egg" odor, and is sometimes associated with yellow staining. Though commonly referred to as sulfur, this is incorrect, as actual sulfur is a chemical element with a naturally solid crystalline form and very little odor. Manganese is identifiable by black slime build up in standing water, and a metallic taste sometimes accompanies it. Chemical-free treatment of these contaminates using the popular Filox* systems eliminates the associated problems without the hassle of chlorine, potassium permanganate, or other chemicals. Controlled by the rugged mechanical Fleck 2510 or the user friendly digital Fleck 7000SXT control head, this system automatically backwashes itself to maintain system performance and efficiency. Outstanding manufacturer warranties are backed by Pentair, a trusted name in water treatment for decades! A 5 year warranty on the control head ensures the system will function as it should, and a 10 year warranty on the tank provides peace of mind. Additional warranty information can be seen here. In addition, all of our systems are backed by our 30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee. If you buy it and for any reason are not satisfied, return it for a refund! Complete system includes tank, riser tube, control head, media, bypass valve, and chemical tank. System is shipped in separate boxes to save on shipping costs and make placing the system easier. (Systems can be loaded upon request, contact us for shipping & handling costs on pre-loaded systems) Online installation instructions provide detailed steps on filling, installing, setting up, and maintaining your system.

Air Injection Iron, Sulfur, and manganese Removal Oxidizing Water Filter For Whole House, AI25 2510SXT

Iron is a common problem in homes today. It causes red staining on fixtures, as well as turning clothes and sometimes even your hair a reddish orange color. Sulfur is easily detected by the presence of a "rotten egg" odor, and is sometimes associated with yellow staining. Manganese is most often seen as a black slimy substance that builds in standing water, and may impart a metallic taste to the water. All of these problems can be eliminated with our Air Injection System. Using the principle of oxidation, the system forces the contaminates into contact with oxygen. Most older air injection systems consist of either two separate tanks or by using a Venturi valve to inject air into the water. cleaned and/or replaced. By utilizing a patented piston, our Air Injection system is able to put the whole oxidation process inside one tank, keeping maintenance costs and down time to a minimum. This is done by creating a bubble of pressurized air at the top of the tank (done during the backwash cycle). The air in the tank then oxidized the contaminates, with the Filox media trapping them. Then every few days the system automatically backwashes itself, rinsing the contaminates off the media and replenishing the air bubble. This system is chemical free, and is able to remove higher contaminate levels than most other tank systems on the market. By using high quality Filox media combined with oxidation, you can say goodbye to your iron, sulfur and manganese problems without worrying about dangerous chemicals. Complete system includes tank, riser tube, deflector, control head, media, and bypass valve. Online installation instructions provide detailed steps on filling, installing, setting up, and maintaining your system.

gasometer>>basin

gasometer>>basin

at the gas works, there's a ninety foot deep concrete pit in the ground under the gasometer that used to hold water. in it would sit an inverted cup holding gas manufactured on the site. the giant metal cup would move up and down within the metal frame of the gasometer depending on the volume or pressure of gas it needed to hold, with the pit of water below acting as a seal.

my idea is to remove the remaining cup, cut it to be 40' tall, and flip it upside down. then it would be lowered back into the soil-filled filled pit and used as a basin in which storm water captured from my site would flow into. inside, wetland plants and sand would filter it. water will evaporate or be piped out for irrigation.

Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and All Climates, 2nd edition

Drip irrigation is the best way to help any plant flourish and survive tough times, especially short or long droughts. Pick the wrong "stuff " and you easily can feel overwhelmed. Robert Kourik's Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and All Climates clearly explains how to use less water yet increase the yields of vegetables and promote the growth and flowering of all plants--trees, shrubs, and container plants--in any climate, even where it rains irregularly.
In the tradition of the original groundbreaking book, this fully revised edition incorporates new information essential for gardeners, including how to manage limited water supplies with precision and efficiency, without the clutter of hundreds of widgets and gizmos, and the knowledge is shared in Kourik's inimitable, friendly, down-to-earth, and easy-to-understand style.
Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and All Climates, reveals how to:
Utilize drip irrigation for everything you grow--trees, shrubs, hanging plants, container plants, and vegetable and flower gardens --and save up to 50 percent of your water compared to sprinklers.
Use a streamlined configuration of hardware and tubing.
Choose the best, sturdiest hardware that will last for decades in your home landscape and vegetable garden.
Pick tubing that has no emitters punched on the outside--these have a tendency to break off--and use this tubing buried beneath the surface to irrigate without losing any water to wind or evaporation.
Roll out a drip system in a very short period of time, avoiding tedious hours punching in emitters or adding smaller tubing to reach each plant.
Capture and reuse gray water and cistern water for irrigation.
Construct a system in which the main parts are effectively hidden or can be simply attached to an existing garden faucet.
Individual projects are carefully detailed and include: how anyone can construct a system by attaching it to an existing garden faucet or the main water supply, constructing larger assemblies for big gardens, irrigating all sizes of potted plants, easy ways to irrigate a vegetable garden, and how to lay out tubing for the best health of trees and shrubs.

Polarized Lens Filter

polarized lens filter

    polarized lens
  • (Polarized Lenses) Polarized Lenses block out virtually all Ultra Violet Rays. These lenses help to eliminate haze and glare, while increasing visibility. Colors appear more vibrant while others are subdivided to give the wearer true view without the irritating sun. Excellent for driving!

  • A polarizer is a device that converts a beam of electromagnetic waves (light) of undefined or mixed polarization into a beam with well-defined polarization. The common types of polarizers are linear polarizers and circular polarizers.

  • (Polarized Lenses) Light waves traveling freely can vibrate in any direction. When light strikes a horizontal reflecting surface such as water, sand or pavement, it vibrates horizontally creating glare. To the unprotected eye, glare can decrease depth perception.

Canon EOS 7D High Grade Multi-Coated, Multi-Threaded, 3 Piece Lens Filter Kit (77mm) Made By Optics Nc + Nwv Direct Microfiber Cleaning Cloth.

This Item Includes: 1. UV Lens Filter 2. Polarizing Filter 3. Flourescent Filter 4. Filter Pouch 5. Nwv Direct Microfiber Cleaning Cloth. Lens filters are translucent pieces of glass placed in front of a camera lens to alter or adjust the light entering the camera and more importantly to protect the camera lens. Lens filters improve photographs by giving photographers control over light and allowing them to emphasize the features of a scene that they consider most important. This filter kit is a combination of the three essential filters no photographer should be without.UV--Film and a digital CCD are more sensitive to UV light than our eyes are. This often shows up in images shot from high altitudes and long distances especially over water. This filter will remove the UV light and more importantly protect your lens from moisture, scratches, and damage.Polarizer--provides color and contrast enhancement. Reflected light often shows up as a whitish glare that washes out color in an image. A polarizing filter will correct this problem creating deep blue skies. It also removes glare from non-metallic surfaces such as windows and water.FLD--provides color correction when shooting under fluorescent lighting. It will remove the greenish tint from the image, providing pleasing skin tones and true to life color renditions. Warranty:10 year manufacturer warranty. Made in Japan

Polaroid Suncover slim 3D - PDN8101A - ReaID Technology

We see the world in 3 dimensions. A movie screen, however, is 2 dimensional. In order to see a movie in 3D we need to "fool" our brain, making it believe we are seeing something in 3D that is actually only 2D.This is done by having causing the left eye and right eye to see the same object (image) from a slightly different angle. The left eye must see the left view of an object (visual A) and the right eye the right view of the same object (visual B). Our brain then combines the two visuals, A and B, to create a single 3D image. To form a 3D image, each eye must see only its own visual; that is the left eye visual A and the right eye visual B. If both eyes see both visuals then the brain will not be able to create a 3D image of the object but will create a 2D blurred and out of focus image. To ensure that each eye sees only its own visual, we need to filter out, for one eye, the visual that is meant for the other eye. This is why we need 3D glasses. In 3D glasses, the lens in front of the left eye can filter out visual B which is meant for the right eye, and vice versa. Only properly-designed and manufactured 3D glasses guarantee that each eye sees only "their own visual" - a must to achieve the proper 3D effect and experience.
Please note: Premium Polarized 3D glasses ONLY work with circular polarized technology and not with shutter technology or linear polarized systems.Shutter technologies only work with so called "active 3D glasses" which include batteries and need to be electronically linked to the movie screen. They are re-used many times by the cinemas, require washing between uses, look quite clumsy, and are very expensive.
