    sand filter
  • The oldest and most basic filtration process, which generally uses two grades of sand (coarse and fine) for turbidity removal or as a first stage roughing filter or pre-filter in more complex processing systems.

  • A filter used in water purification and consisting of layers of sand arranged with coarseness of texture increasing downward

  • Sand filters are used for water purification. There are three main types; # rapid (gravity) sand filters # upflow sand filters # slow sand filters

  • (sand filters) Devices that remove some suspended solids from sewage. Air and bacteria decompose additional wastes filtering through the sand so that cleaner water drains from the bed.

  • supplying dry land with water by means of ditches etc

  • (medicine) cleaning a wound or body organ by flushing or washing out with water or a medicated solution

  • (irrigate) supply with a constant flow or sprinkling of some liquid, for the purpose of cooling, cleansing, or disinfecting; "irrigate the wound"

Simplified Irrigation Design, 2nd Edition (Landscape Architecture)

The Second Edition of this best-selling academic guide to irrigation design has been completely rewritten so you can understand it easily. Created for the irrigation designer and installer, as well as students, Simplified Irrigation Design clearly explains irrigation design and related hydraulics, without the need for interpretation by teachers. Each chapter builds on the other, presenting all the fundamentals of irrigation design before getting into the more complicated aspects of irrigation, such as:
* basic hydraulics
* pipe sizing
* friction loss calculations
* determining water pressure.
Photos and illustrations show exactly how every concept and piece of equipment works. In addition, you'll learn how to estimate costs and write specifications. Pipe sizes are described according to ASTM to help you fully understand the limits of irrigation pipe use. The expanded Second Edition of this popular guide to landscape irrigation includes all the latest equipment and techniques. Just a few of the new features include:
* Methods of conserving water to help you anticipate your clients' environmental concerns
* Computerized methods for managing labor and irrigation systems that will help you save money on labor and water costs
* Metric values for every Imperial (U.S.) measurement, enabling you to meet federal metric guidelines and better communicate with an international audience.
Another bonus: the author has combed the minds of irrigation designers, contractors, and equipment manufacturers to help you avoid costly mistakes that even veterans make. Whether you're just learning or brushing up on the latest technology, you'll want to read the Second Edition of Simplified Irrigation Design from cover to cover.

at the gas works, there's a ninety foot deep concrete pit in the ground under the gasometer that used to hold water. in it would sit an inverted cup holding gas manufactured on the site. the giant metal cup would move up and down within the metal frame of the gasometer depending on the volume or pressure of gas it needed to hold, with the pit of water below acting as a seal.

my idea is to remove the remaining cup, cut it to be 40' tall, and flip it upside down. then it would be lowered back into the soil-filled filled pit and used as a basin in which storm water captured from my site would flow into. inside, wetland plants and sand would filter it. water will evaporate or be piped out for irrigation.

While driving in W Texas from Lubbock to Midland, the wind kicked up to 40 mph gusts, picking up all the sand from dry fields. At times, it was like driving in heavy fog. I emptied a small handful of sand out of the air filter at the end of the 2 hour drive.

Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and All Climates, 2nd edition

Drip irrigation is the best way to help any plant flourish and survive tough times, especially short or long droughts. Pick the wrong "stuff " and you easily can feel overwhelmed. Robert Kourik's Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and All Climates clearly explains how to use less water yet increase the yields of vegetables and promote the growth and flowering of all plants--trees, shrubs, and container plants--in any climate, even where it rains irregularly.
In the tradition of the original groundbreaking book, this fully revised edition incorporates new information essential for gardeners, including how to manage limited water supplies with precision and efficiency, without the clutter of hundreds of widgets and gizmos, and the knowledge is shared in Kourik's inimitable, friendly, down-to-earth, and easy-to-understand style.
Drip Irrigation for Every Landscape and All Climates, reveals how to:
Utilize drip irrigation for everything you grow--trees, shrubs, hanging plants, container plants, and vegetable and flower gardens --and save up to 50 percent of your water compared to sprinklers.
Use a streamlined configuration of hardware and tubing.
Choose the best, sturdiest hardware that will last for decades in your home landscape and vegetable garden.
Pick tubing that has no emitters punched on the outside--these have a tendency to break off--and use this tubing buried beneath the surface to irrigate without losing any water to wind or evaporation.
Roll out a drip system in a very short period of time, avoiding tedious hours punching in emitters or adding smaller tubing to reach each plant.
Capture and reuse gray water and cistern water for irrigation.
Construct a system in which the main parts are effectively hidden or can be simply attached to an existing garden faucet.
Individual projects are carefully detailed and include: how anyone can construct a system by attaching it to an existing garden faucet or the main water supply, constructing larger assemblies for big gardens, irrigating all sizes of potted plants, easy ways to irrigate a vegetable garden, and how to lay out tubing for the best health of trees and shrubs.
